Thrive and Awaken® Tip
Love is at the heart of our existence, but how we experience and express it depends on our state of consciousness. Love can be contracted, conditional, and focused on fulfilling our needs, or it can be expansive, unconditional, and experienced as the very essence of who we are. As we move from Surviving to Thriving to Awakening, our experience of love transforms.
In Survival Mode, love is filtered through the ego’s need for safety, belonging, worthiness, and control. We love people, possessions, achievements, and experiences because of what they provide for us. We may love money for the security it offers, power for the control it gives us, or recognition and celebrity for the sense of importance they bring. Even our love for others can become conditional on whether they meet our needs, share our beliefs, or affirm our sense of self.
There is nothing inherently wrong with enjoying these experiences. They can bring genuine feelings of pleasure, satisfaction, and connection. However, when we seek them to compensate for the ego’s perceived deficiencies, the uplifting feelings are usually temporary. The satisfaction fades because the underlying sense of something missing remains. We then find ourselves searching for the next achievement, possession, relationship, or experience that promises to make us feel whole. Love becomes something we continually seek rather than something we recognize within ourselves.
In Thriving Mode, we begin to recognize these patterns with Compassionate Curiosity. Rather than judging our desires or attachments, we explore what is motivating them. Are we seeking love to fill an emptiness, or are we expressing love from a place of inner fullness? As we develop greater self-awareness and self-compassion, our capacity to love expands. We become less dependent on external circumstances to feel worthy, safe, or connected. We can enjoy people and possessions without needing them to define who we are.
Love becomes less about what we can obtain and more about what we can share. We choose to be loving even when others disagree with us, disappoint us, or fail to meet our expectations. Our hearts open to a broader experience of life.
In Awakening Mode, an even more profound shift occurs. As our identification with the ego diminishes and our recognition of ourselves as Oneness deepens, love is no longer experienced primarily as an emotion directed toward someone or something. It is recognized as the very nature of our existence.
From this awakened perspective, there is nothing outside of Oneness and therefore nothing outside of love. What we previously experienced as separateness begins to dissolve into an ever present awareness of our interconnectedness. Love is no longer dependent on who we are with, what we possess, or how life unfolds. It is pure, unconditional love, embracing all of existence without needing anything to be different.
This doesn’t mean we stop enjoying possessions, achievements, or relationships. Nor does it mean we lose our preferences or boundaries. Rather, we no longer depend on these experiences to complete us. We discover that the Love we have been seeking has been present all along.
A reflection: Notice what you love and why you love it. Is your love connected to what something or someone provides for you? Can you appreciate that experience while releasing the need for it to make you whole? Then become still and sense the love that is present without needing anything at all. What changes when you recognize love not as something you must find, but as the essence of who you are?
