Thrive and Awaken® Tip
Judgment is one of the ego’s most basic survival strategies. We continually evaluate ourselves, others, and life as safe or unsafe, good or bad, adequate or inadequate, right or wrong. Over time, we can become so identified with these judgments that they begin to define who we think we are.
In Survival Mode, judgment helps us navigate potential threats. Our ancestors needed to quickly determine what was safe, who could be trusted, and whether they were accepted by the group. That capacity remains active within us today, even when our survival is not at stake. We judge other people, our circumstances, and perhaps most painfully, ourselves.
The problem is not that judgments arise. Judging is a natural function of the human mind. The problem comes when we identify with our judgments and mistake them for reality. “I’m not good enough.” “They shouldn’t be like that.” “Something is wrong with me.” “This shouldn’t be happening.” These thoughts can become the lens through which we experience life.
In Thriving Mode, we become aware of these automatic judgments and choose how we want to think, feel, and behave. Rather than allowing an old Survival Mode reaction to determine our experience, we can choose thoughts and responses that are more affirming, compassionate, heartfelt, and aligned with who we want to be.
Awakening invites an even deeper shift. Rather than simply replacing one judgment with a healthier one, we begin to disidentify with the judging mind itself. We recognize that judgments arise within awareness.
Awareness does not need to eliminate the judgments. It is the spacious Presence that can hold them without becoming them. A judgment can arise, be noticed, and pass through, while awareness remains.
This is a profound shift in identity. Instead of experiencing yourself primarily as the one who is judging, evaluating, defending, and trying to get life right, you begin to recognize yourself as the awareness within which all of that is occurring.
Pause, breathe, and reflect on:
Surviving identifies with the judgment.
Thriving chooses a more conscious response.
Awakening rests as the awareness that holds them both.
