Q: Is Thrive and Awaken® a form of psychotherapy?
A: Thrive and Awaken® is not a form of psychotherapy. It is an educational experience in discovering your deepest nature that is always present and is experienced more fully as the ego transforms. Psychotherapy, according to the Oxford dictionary, is a “treatment of mental disorders by the use of psychological methods.” In Thrive and Awaken® we are not treating a mental disorder such as major depression, obsessive-compulsiveness, or schizophrenia. If you are experiencing such conditions, we encourage you to see a licensed mental health professional before you engage too deeply in the spiritual journey. It is important to feel stable and not pulled into the pain of some emotional or behavioral disorder.
As discussed in the Conscious Awareness section, this work honors our emotional and physical reactivity as a natural part of being human and is common for everyone. For example, it is wired into our brain to go into Survival Mode when we feel threatened. We experience it as the fight, flight, freeze reaction. Thrive and Awaken® is oriented towards having compassionate awareness of such common reactions and learning the tools to manage them, so we choose how to respond rather than automatically react. This process allows us to reside more in a mindful Thriving Mode that paves the way for greater states of consciousness.
We are not treating emotional or behavioral disorders, but are focused on learning about the normal reactions everyone has. We will use methods such as self-inquiry, mindfulness, and self-compassion that are helpful in treating mental disorders, but in Thrive and Awaken® they for transforming normal egoic reactions. The transformation is about releasing the identity to a limited personality and experiencing the qualities of being an expression the Universe. In psychotherapy one is focused on building up the ego not transforming it.
If you are interested in thriving in life and discovering your spiritual nature, then Thrive and Awaken® is one approach to consider. If you are struggling with some emotional, behavioral, or cognitive disorder then finding a psychotherapist would be best for you. You and your therapist can decide if elements of Thrive and Awaken® may be in your best interest. We have a Professional Membership specifically for those in helping professions to check out specific tools and courses to use in ways they feel are appropriate.
