It is natural and healthy to regret doing something that was not consistent with how you want to be. It’s healthy for a short period of time as it brings undesirable thoughts, behaviors, or emotions to your attention.
If we stay in regret, we get stuck in the past and are not moving forward. We stay in regret because we are resisting rather than accepting what happened. The resistance keeps us in a contracted Survival Mode place where we are much more likely to repeat whatever we regret.
Once we recognize what is undesirable, we want to release the regret and move into acceptance of our humanness and learn the lessons from the situation. By learning from the past, we get to choose a different moment. Acceptance, learning, and choosing differently are core concepts of thriving.
